If you can only justify one subscription, the honest answer depends on what the majority of your week looks like. All three are excellent. They are not interchangeable.

Claude and ChatGPT trade the lead depending on the benchmark; Gemini is close behind but tends to be more confidently wrong on edge cases. For work where a subtle error is expensive — legal, financial modelling, medical summarisation — Claude's tendency to flag uncertainty is worth more than a benchmark point.
Coding
Claude is the clear leader for multi-file, multi-step work. ChatGPT is stronger at one-shot scripts and explaining unfamiliar code. Gemini's advantage appears when the repository is genuinely enormous and context size becomes the binding constraint.
Writing
Claude produces the least generic prose out of the box. ChatGPT adapts to a supplied style guide most reliably. Gemini is the fastest to a serviceable draft.
Price and context
All three consumer tiers sit around twenty dollars a month. On the API, Gemini Flash is dramatically cheaper than anything comparable, and Gemini's million-token window has no real competition for video and very large corpora.
